The Bayshore Discovery Project operates the schooner A.J. MEERWALD, an authentically restored oyster schooner, as a hands-on classroom for stewardship of the Delaware Estuary and its environs. She is designated as New Jersey’s Official tall ship, and as such she travels from near Trenton on the Delaware River to the Atlantic coast and Hudson River. The student program includes sailing the ship, trawling for marine life, as well as prepared learning stations. Shore-based programming includes Wetlands Discovery Tours and in-school Assemblies. We are currently accepting applications for the 2011 sailing season from April through October.


Onboard Positions:


Onboard Education CoordinatorResponsibilities include overseeing the onboard education program, presenting our programs, supervision, hiring and training educators, coordinating crew scheduling, curriculum/program development, and interfacing with school groups. This is a seasonal position with the possibility of becoming a year round position for the right person. During the sailing season room and board is provided on the schooner. A relevant degree along with education experience is required. A strong environmental ethic, plenty of stamina, flexibility, great organizational skills and a positive attitude are essential. Salary is based on experience.


Chief MateThe Chief mate works closely with other crew members, volunteer crew, and office staff to ensure a high quality on-board educational program.  S(he) is responsible for running a safe navigational watch during transits, supervising deck operations during day sails, and overseeing the maintenance of the A.J.Meerwald.  Requires a 100-ton mate license with sail endorsement (near coastal preferred) and diesel engine maintenance skills. Masters license a plus. Depending on license and boat handling skills may also be Relief Captain. 


Second MateThe second mate will help coordinate shipboard maintenance and vessel operations as well as participate in the onboard education program.  Previous experience operating and maintaining a traditionally rigged wooden sailing vessel is required. 100-ton mate license with sail endorsement is preferred. Applicable experience will be considered. Diesel engine maintenance skills and previous education experience a plus.


CookThe Cook is responsible for three vegetarian (some seafood) meals daily for 8-12 crew as well as occasional special events and/or light catering for up to 45 passengers.  The cook purchases provisions, manages a galley budget, and oversees galley upkeep. Applicant must be an amiable, flexible, adventurous person with good cooking skills and strong environmental ethic.


Educator/ DeckhandEducators will present Delaware Estuary specific learning stations onboard, present shore-based education programs, and participate in shipboard maintenance and vessel operations. The position requires environmental education experience, a degree in natural resources or equivalent experience, strong environmental ethic, plenty of stamina, flexibility and a positive attitude. Boat experience a plus. 


Educator/ Deckhand/ Relief CookPerforms the duties of an Educator Deckhand as well as cooking and provisioning when cook is on leave.


Intern PositionsInterns are expected to serve for a three month period, and positions are available starting April. The position requires some environmental education (or equivalent experience), boat experience a plus, strong environmental ethic, plenty of stamina, flexibility and a positive attitude.


Compensation & Commitment—Salary (based on experience), plus meals (mostly vegetarian) and living quarters onboard ship from April to October.
